Major changes to the design and construction of the Stalls has resulted in the most advanced system for racing in terms of safety and reliability. Safety for jockeys, horses, and handlers. Reliability on all types of tracks, in all types of weather and under all racing conditions.
Our Stall formula gives the horse and jockey considerably more room on the jump-out. We have produced wider horse guides which not only provide greater control of a horse in the Stalls, but they increase the safety of both jockey and horse by giving greater clearance from the font gates and vertical uprights.
WOOD'S STARTING STALLS
INTERNATIONAL ™
“Our expertise in the horse racing industry in unrivalled. Since 1955 we have been closely associated with clubs worldwide. The company’s success is a direct result of developing products, using the latest in information technology, which meet the most stringent standards of safety and reliability.
The two fundamental issues which must be addressed when purchasing Starting Stalls: Safety and Reliability. Safety for the Jockeys, Horses, Handlers and Starters. Reliability on all track types, in all weathers and under all conditions.
In the past, Starting Stalls were required to be very compact in order to accommodate large fields and compensate for the space lost when two or more units were coupled together. This meant building Stalls with narrow centres, resulting in increased dangers for both Jockey and Horse and sometimes caused crowding at a jump-out with large fields.
Now days, with smaller fields and increased demand for 8, 10 and 12 Stall Units, we have increased the Stall centres. In addition, we have shortened the width of the Stall structure while the Jockey’s head clearance remains at a safe height.
Just look at the Stalls of the 60s and see how far we have come today. Our reputation has been built not only on producing quality products but by being able to meet the changing requirements of the racing organisations around the world.”
FRONT GATE
The front gates have been lowered to deter horses from crawling underneath. The height has also been increased in front of the horse’s head. Helical springs are used for each gate, significantly improving the opening movement. They are positioned high at the top of the gate and are completely trouble free. Our patented Front Gate Suction Cups are positioned for improved function and quieter starts.
Following discussions with a number of Champion Jockeys, the bars on the Front Gates of all our Stalls run horizontally. This is an important feature as it improves the jockeys’ visibility and increases their safety at the jump-out.

REAR GATE LOCKING MODULE ®
The new Rear Gate Locking Module eliminates all external mechanical levers between the rear gates and is fitted below the horse guides and isolated from the horse.
A release knob opens the gate which remains open until a horse enters the stall and the gate is pushed closed.
HYDRAULIC STEERING
Hydraulic steering is an important feature of our Starting Stalls which gives greater manoeuvrability with less chance of accidents. It is completely independent of the tractor or any other steering mechanism on the stalls.
The operator is able to maintain total control over the steering of the the back wheels. His position on the stalls is such that he has excellent visibiltiy and can easily communicate with the tractor driver.
Steering compensation has been adapted to the end of the tow bar steering system which incorporates dual wheels.
TRANSPORT
All Wood’s Stalls are completely finished and tested before leaving the factory. The Stalls can be sea freighted in an open-top container or by road transporter as an indivisible load.
On delivery, Wood’s professional staff will train all racing personnel in the correct operatin procedures of the Stalls.
